Join us in making a difference for Sharon Community Foundation!
Dear fellow Sharon Cardinals,
My name is Michael Dick, last child of Harold and Catherine Dick, Class of “82”. I have always valued
my upbringing in our little town of Sharon. I decided it was time to give back to the community I love,
even though I live in Hutchinson, KS now with my wife Laura. Mayor Josh Inslee had reached out to me
lately telling me about an ongoing project happening in the old Sharon High building. The Sharon Senior
citizens group secured a $30,000 grant from BCBS and decided a new gym floor was best use of the
money for community fitness and activities. However, the total cost of the project will be $45,000. To
get the floor ordered we need $5000 right away.
My wife and I have been donors to Community Foundations in both Hutchinson and Buhler, and I
always thought this would be a good thing to start up for Sharon, for whenever special funds were
needed in our town. By going through a Community Foundation, your contributions are tax deductible.
There is a South-Central Community Foundation based in Pratt that we could go through, but I am
suggesting we use the one that I am familiar with and trust. This account could be set up within 24
hours. Even though when you make out a check to this fund, it will need to say Hutchinson Community
Foundation, with City of Sharon, Kansas Community Fund put on the memo line. These funds will only
be used for Sharon. If we went with the South-Central Kansas Community Foundation you would be
addressing, it the same way. This needs to be done this way to ensure it is tax deductible.
The first $5000 that is needed right away will be charged a 3% fee to get this setup in the Foundation.
I have already secured these funds so no need to worry about the 3% charge. Below is what has been
suggested to secure the $10,000 more that is needed and beyond for future needs.
After consulting with Hutchinson Community Foundation, we believe we should create a permanent
fund entitled City of Sharon, Kansas Community Designated Fund. The contributions to this fund
would also qualify for a charitable deduction. In this fund, contributions may be made immediately by
individuals and organizations or over the life of the fund by either cash, stock, mutual fund or end-of-life
gifts from donors. Fundraising events may not be used to generate contributions to this fund; however,
the City may make contributions to the fund as well as individuals or organizations. All contributions are
to Hutchinson Community Foundation. The fund may only pay out to the City of Sharon for its use, but
it may do so in any amount at any time. The purpose of this fund is not for the City to take all the money
out of this longer-term fund as soon as it is received; rather, the City should consider carefully any
requests so that the fund may grow over time for possible larger needs that may arise. This type of fund
has a 1.25% annual fee. The fee is charged to the fund monthly (1/12th of 1.25%) based on the average
daily balance of the fund. There is a minimum annual fee of $250. This fund would be invested initially
in cash. Perhaps another investment option, such as the Hutchinson Community Foundation, would be
appropriate after the fund builds up a balance over time.
We will also be setting up a five-person Board of Directors to oversee the investment of this money and
approve all requests for distribution. This fund can help in many ways, such as buying paint for homes,
buying park equipment, ball diamond upkeep and fire station equipment to name a few.
The Board of Directors to start off this campaign are as follows:
Michael J Dick Class of “82” Hutchinson, KS
Doug Eck Class of “80” Andale, KS
Greg Rowe Class of “78” Wichita, KS
Doug Schmidt Class of “75” Sharon, KS
Rick Pyle Class of “80” Sharon, KS
Just click on this link http://hutchinson.fcsuite.com/erp/donate to learn exactly how you can sign up
and give. We will be sending occasional emails to you to update you with what is being done with your
money and how it is benefiting the community of Sharon. I feel that fellow Sharon Cardinals can and
will rise together to make this happen. No amount is too small or large to give. I really think $100,000 or
more can be attained. With this kind of support, we can make sure that the Sharon community is taken
care of, and we can drive into our hometown with great pride.
Thanks, and best regards,
Michael J Dick
